“my kids are grown, and i don’t know what my role is now.”
“I’m tired of my career and need a change.”
“i want something different, but i don’t know where to start.”
mid-life, am i right?
I get it.
When you start your life as an adult, there’s so much emphasis on growth: getting an education, developing a career, dating and eventually developing a long-term relationship or marriage, starting a family, creating a home. Why isn’t there a roadmap for mid-life? Nobody prepared you for it. There are so many changes happening that you can’t even figure out what to tackle first. That youthful, athletic body you used to have? Achy, makes weird noises, and is starting to wrinkle. Those friends you used to hang out with? Moved to Portland. Those kids you spent so much time driving back and forth to soccer games, ballet recitals, and band rehearsals? Out of the house and starting their own adult lives. That career you spent so much time developing? Meh, it’s not so fun anymore, and you’d rather be in Paris. Your parents, aunts, and uncles? They’re getting older and starting to need more attention and care. Where do you fit into all of this? That’s the question, isn’t it?
The truth is, this time of life can be really difficult to navigate, and it’s easy to lose your way. It comes with unexpected curve balls, some wonderful (Grandkids! Alanis Morissette is touring again!), and some not so wonderful (why didn’t anyone tell you about all of the “joys” of menopause??). It can bring up old emotional wounds that you thought were long gone but which were merely festering under your skin and waiting for you to notice them. And then there’s that existential dread that time is running out, and you’ve got to make some serious changes in your life if you don’t want to end up like Aunt Becky who died of a heart attack at age 56. It’s a lot.
You’re at the perfect point in your life to spend time on YOU.
